Avoid the Unpleasant Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Introduce yourself to the Numerous Treatment Choices

Irritable bowel syndrome is every bit as unpleasant as it sounds and although there is no cure for it, ibs treatment can be found to alleviate or remove the symptoms.  Treatments for IBS can enable you to handle the otherwise painful problems associated with the condition and these will depend on your symptoms.

The Symptoms of IBS

Symptoms that could indicate the presence of IBS include diarrhoea, constipation, a combination of diarrhoea and constipation together, abdominal pains, weight loss, bloating, or just general discomfort in your abdomen.  Living with any of these symptoms can be a major detriment to everyday activities, so getting them in check is a worthwhile priority.  There are a number of minor changes you can make to your life which will really help get your symptoms under control such as changing your diet and taking medication.

Rethink What You Eat

Altering what you eat can make a big difference in the severity of your IBS.  Some options work and some options do not so it is a good idea to give as many different options a try before settling into a new diet.  For some individuals, IBS is linked to their intake of lactose and dairy products such as milk and cheese can cause their IBS to act up.  This is not surprising considering that IBS and lactose intolerance are nearly identical in terms of their symptoms on the human body.

Reducing how much fructose and fructan that you consume can also be highly beneficial and can reduce the frequency that you have diarrhoea, constipation, or the alternation between the two.  Increasing how much fibre that you intake can be a great way to normalise your bowel activity and can make life much more comfortable in general.  For those who are primarily experiencing constipation, increasing the intake of your fibre can play a big role in eliminating the problems that constipation brings.

Medications Are Also Helpful

Medication can be a great way to get your IBS into check and to alleviate a lot of the pains of IBS.  There are a number of medications for IBS treatment but they are always specific to the symptoms that are bothering you.  If you are experiencing constipation, for example, then laxatives can be a great medication to take to help clear your system.  Antispasmodics can also be helpful to reduce spasms.  Tricyclic antidepressants and SSRIs can be used to reduce most symptoms of IBS too.  SSRIs tend to be considered more effective at reducing symptoms than tricyclic antidepressants.  Serotoin agonists and antagonists have shown to help with a broad spectrum of issues associated with IBS.
